Air Vice Marshal B M Tyagi, VSM, Director (Strategy)

An accomplished Fighter Pilot having served the Indian Air Force for 34 years in different positions. Have multifaceted experience from fighter aircraft flying to Command of formations and dealing capital acquisition cases. At Air Force Headquarters, as Principal Director Projects, he was involved in acquisition and steering a number of projects including formulation of qualitative requirements, contract negotiations to conclusion. He was also involved in higher decision making of Capital Acquisition including interaction with Defence Industries as part of his tenure at Acquisition Wing of Ministry of Defence where he served as the Additional Director General Acquisition Technical (Air).

Well acquainted with planning and executing projects. A go getter and have a passion for Program Management. He has a rich and vast experience of interacting with leading aerospace companies across the Globe and actively engaged with Indian OEMs, MSMEs and DPSUs in all fields related to Capital acquisitions including product development, testing, certification, government rules and regulations.

Being at the decision-making level of Defence Capital Acquisition at the Ministry of Defence, he has been able to steer and negotiate projects leading to inking of multiple contracts viz LCA Tejas Mk-IA fighter aircraft, Light Combat Helicopter, ASTRA Mk-I Air to air missiles, C-295 Medium Transport Aircraft etc for the Indian Armed Forces.

Improved operational efficiency of formations and establishments under the entire Area of Responsibility of SWAC by exercising control over the operational air borne platforms. Exercised operational and administrative control over Operational Flying Squadrons, Missile Squadrons & Radar Units under the Station. Studied details pertaining to National Security and various strategic implications. Earned Master of Philosophy in National Security and Strategic Studies.

As PD (Projects), he has steered many projects from conceptualisation, formulation of Air Staff Qualitative Requirements to contract finalisation and procurement thus improving the operational capability of the Indian Air Force. He was also involved in decision making on Capital Acquisition at Air Force Headquarters. Prior to this, he was also Director Aircraft Upgrade & Projects and Inductions at Air Headquarters, dealing with upgrade programs and inductions related to fighters, transport and helicopter fleets of IAF.

Exercised operational and administrative control over Operational Flying Squadron and other operational formations within the station. Implemented and monitored various induction and upgrade projects of fighter aircraft, transport aircraft and helicopters of Indian Air Force. As Staff Pilot have acquired skills on fighter flying and attained fully operational status on aircraft type both during day and night.
